The author ... portrays her subject in all her complexities and doesn’t shy away from showing how vicious she could be. ... The author also intriguingly explores Vincent’s sexuality, discussing her attraction to her minister’s daughter and her later physical and emotional affairs with both women and men. Overall, it’s a compulsively readable work, even though some sections move so quickly that they can be disorienting.
An often engaging take on a complex artist.

Young Vincent is a work of biographical fiction that tells the story of the poet and playwright from latchkey child to cavalier and defiant Vassar graduate. As the eldest daughter of Henry and Cora, it was Vincent's responsibility to care for her two younger sisters when their mother was away, including nursing for them when they all got typhoid fever, managing the household and helping bring in extra cash by taking odd jobs. Fun-loving, gifted, but temperamental, the beautiful redhead bucked the system at every turn, yet miraculously found a patron while earning money entertaining guests at a local inn. Vassar College soon beckoned, as did celebrity and numerous romantic entanglements with men and women.
Jenifer Kay Hood captures this intriguing tale with gusto, using Millay's letters, journals, and first hand interviews with the poet's sister, lovers and friends to create an in depth look at the life that shaped one of the foremost poets of the Modernist era.

About the Author
A lifetime of study

Jenifer Kay Hood has been described as "the foremost living interpreter of Edna St. Vincent Millay" by The Advocate. In addition to the usual slew of biographies, letters and journals, Young Vincent benefits from Hood's first hand interviews with Millay's sister Norma, childhood friends, college chums and former lovers. She holds a master's degree in American Literature of the 20th Century and is an award winning writer. Hood believes English is too rich a language to limit it to two syllables. Her one-woman show on Millay was performed across the country and was featured on PBS in 1987.
